Upper Mustang Trek

A journey into the breathtaking forbidden Kingdom of Mustang offers a moderate trek into a hidden Tibetan Buddhist enclave. This is a real cultural experience while walking through sculpted canyons and deep gorges and visiting medieval villages, ancient fortresses, palaces and mysterious, ancient cave hermitages. Mustang is a Kingdom tucked away along the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, a remote and starkly beautiful region, Tibet's arid high desert bordered by some of the Himalaya's highest mountains. This stark and barren area of the middle Himalayas holds the last remnants of true Tibetan lifestyle untainted by foreign occupation.

Trip Detail

A journey into the breathtaking forbidden Kingdom of Mustang offers a moderate trek into a hidden Tibetan Buddhist enclave. This is a real cultural experience while walking through sculpted canyons and deep gorges and visiting medieval villages, ancient fortresses, palaces and mysterious, ancient cave hermitages. Mustang is a Kingdom tucked away along the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, a remote and starkly beautiful region, Tibet's arid high desert bordered by some of the Himalaya's highest mountains. This stark and barren area of the middle Himalayas holds the last remnants of true Tibetan lifestyle untainted by foreign occupation

Mustang was an independent country until it was annexed into Nepal and enjoys its own autonomy and the residents live much the same as they have for centuries. The kingdom of Mustang lies in the rain shadow area of Himalaya formed by the Mt. Annapurna & Nilgiri and therefore, gets very little rain which makes the area ideal for trekking even in the monsoon season while the other areas of Nepal remain unsuitable for trekking due to heavy monsoon

Mustang was opened for trekkers in March 1992. This mystique kingdom has been gazetted as a restricted area and requires a special permit to trek therein. Only small numbers of tourists are given access every year to avoid this unique Kingdom being overrun by tourism.  Therefore, you will be part of a small privileged minority to visit this remote outpost of Nepal. The trek route goes along the bank of Kali Gandaki River and finally takes you to the spectacular walled town of Lo-Monthang, the capital of Mustang at 3730 m. It was once an important route for crossing the Himalaya between Tibet and Nepal, and many of the old salt caravans used to pass through this small town. Lo - Manthang is also home to Mustang's former King Jigme Dorjee Palbar Bista who lost his royal title in 2008 after Nepal became a Republic State. But he is still highly regarded and respected by the locals and still occupies the royal palace situated at the center of the city square.

On this trek, we will fully explore the wonders of the architecture, language, culture and traditions which are almost purely Tibetan. Overall, Mustang involves a wilderness of huge proportions and offers a truly exceptional experience. After exploring the area we return to Jomsom and fly again to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
