Trip Detail

Annapurna is a series of peaks in the Himalaya, a 55-km-long massif containing six major peaks over 7,200m i.e.; Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II ( 7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Annapurna IV ( 7,525m), Gangapurna (7,455m) and Annapurna South (7,219m). Annapurna I is 8,091m high and is the 10th highest mountain of above 8000 m in the world out of 14. It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri massif. Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which means “Goddess of the Harvests” or Filled with food.

Annapurna I was first climbed by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, of a French expedition reaching the summit on June 3, 1950. After the first successful ascent Annapurna was not climbed again until 1970, when British army expedition followed the same route as Herzog. At the same time Cris Boning led successful British expedition to the very steep and difficult south face. In 1978, the American Women's Annapurna Expedition, a team led by Arlene Blum, became the first American team to climb Annapurna I. The expedition was also remarkable for being composed entirely of women. In fact, Annapurna I is a real technical, most dangerous and challenging mountain above 8000 m as it has had fewer successful climbs than any other 8000 m peaks.

Competent alpine ice climbing technique and experience climbing on mixed terrain with heavy packs along with good mountaineering and rock climbing skills are must to climb this mountain.
