Tibet
The Tibet Autonomous Region, perched on the southwest Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is a southwestern frontier region in China. Tibet has long been better known as "the Roof of the World", with an average altitude of over 4,000 meters. This is a land of snow-capped mountains, deep tropical rainforests and open pastureland. Its treasures include Mt. Qomolangma- the highest peak in the world on the Sino-Nepalese border, the winding Yarlung Tsangbo River, ancient ruins, palaces, monasteries and a deeply religious cultural heritage.
Due to its inaccessibility, austere environment, and powerful Buddhist culture many travelers, researchers and explorers attract towards this special and fantastic land. The combination of an ancient culture with a rugged landscape makes the experience of Tibet unforgettable. Naturally isolated by the mighty Himalayas in the north, its doors opened to tourists in 1992 with very strict permit requirements.
