The Tsurphu to Yangpachen trek is an excellent choice for those who want to get a close look at the Tibetan herders (drokpa) and their semi-nomadic lifestyle. Although they have permanent winter homes they spend much of the year camping with their animals.
Beginning at Tsurphu Monastery this rugged walk crosses several alpine valleys before emerging into the broad and windswept Yangpachen valley. This is a high elevation trek exceeding 4400m for the entire duration and a maximum elevation of 5300m at the Lasar-la. Combining alpine tundra and sweeping mountain panoramas with visits to monasteries and a nunnery, this trek nicely balances cultural and wilderness activities.
Tsurpu - Yangpachen Trek Itinerary
Day 01: Fly Kathmandu to Lhasa (3650m)
On arrival at Gonggar airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to hotel in Lhasa. Rest of the day free for rest and acclimatization Overnight at hotel
Days 02 & 03: Lhasa Sightseeing
With a relaxed pace to allow for the effects of altitude we spend two days in Lhasa and during the period we visit the great Potala Palace the residence of the Dalai Lamas of Tibet; Norbulinka, the Summer Palace; Drepung Sera, two of the biggest Buddhist monasteries of Tibet; the Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibet; and the bustling Barkhor Tibetan Bazaar. Day 04: Drive to Tsurpu Monastery (4480m , 70km )
Drive to Tsurpu Monastery, the seat of Karmapa branch of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Bhuddhism. The Karmapas are also known as the Black Hats. Overnight at guest house or camp in Tsurpu
Day 05: Begin the trek.
Today, you trek the distance of 11km in 4 hrs and camp at Leten.
Day 06: Trek to Bartso
Today, you trek approx. 3 hr towards north from Leten to Lasar La (5270m / 17,300ft), which is the highest point of this trek. En route, you will see the Damchen Nyingtri, the walk will cover 15 km in 6 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Dorje Ling Nunnery (4 hr, 15km)
Trek towards north-west to Dorje Ling Nunnery, en route view the great Nyenchen Tanglha, the 7111m mountain that gives its name to the range. It is the holiest mountain in central Tibet and is said to be inhabited by a god of same name.
Day 08: Trek to Yangpachen Monastery (5 hr, 14km)
Trek towards north-west for approx. 1 hour to reach the Yangpachen valley. Arrive at the monastery in another 15 minutes. The monastery was home of 115 monks, but many of them have fled to Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim (India). Same day drive back to Lhasa Accommodation in Hotel.
Day 09: Depart Lhasa
Depart Lhasa for your next destination.
Airport transfers, transport to Lhasa by air and return to Kathmandu by road; Sightseeing as per itinerary, all meals on trek, services of a professional Sherpa team, and all equipment including sleeping/dining/toilet tents, sleeping bags (with inner sheets) and foam mattresses; trek staff insurance. Hotel accommodation in Kathmandu and Lhasa with breakfast English speaking guide in Tibet and all land transportation inside Tibet, trek permit & entrance fees etc.
