Sikkim has around 200 monasteries belonging to the Nyingmapa, Gelukpa and Kagyupa section of Buddhism. These monasteries have not only influenced the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people, but also demonstrate the ancient rituals in practice. The monks in red dress at those monasteries, chanting the mantras with the rhythm of drums and cymbals, give the visitors the feeling of peace in mind, relaxing their body with nature of this sacred Himalaya.

The Gompas preserved here are very ancient and made with exquisitely carved wood and icons of silver and gold. The other attractions of this tour includes Darjeeling town, Do-Drul Chorten Stupa, Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology, Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center (Rumtek Monastery), Tashi View Point, Tharpa Choling Monastery and many more. 

Sikkim Monastic Tour Itinerary

Day 01:  Fly to Bhadrapur and transfer to Darjeeling. Overnight at Hotel in Darjeeling.

Day 02:   Full day Darjeeling sightseeing: Early morning visit the Tiger hill for sunrise and Himalayas views, visit Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the house of Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, Natural History Museum, Lloyd Botanical Garden and the Zoo, specializing in high altitude species. Afternoon visit Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre which makes and sells a wide range of Tibetan souvenir and curio. Here you can see Tibetan craftsman making traditional items such as carpets, woolen boots, wood carvings and leather boots. Overnight at the hotel in Darjeeling.

Day 03:   Darjeeling to Gangtok (98 km) 4-5 hours : After breakfast drive to Gangtok. Afternoon free time. Overnight at Hotel in Gangtok.

Day 04 :   Full day Gangtok sightseeing: Visit Enchey Monastery which it is a very beautiful monastery with very beautiful setting, visit Government Institute of Cottage Industries where you can see young students being taught the traditional art of thangkha paintings along with weaving, wood carving and carpet making. Also visit the Institute of Tibetology, housed in a beautiful building, built in traditional Tibetan style, visit Du-drol chorten, visit headquarter of Dharma Chakra Centres (Rumtek Monastery), the present seat of His Holiness, the Gyalwa Karmapa. Rumtek which is a good example of Tibetan monastic arts. Overnight at hotel in Gangtok.

Day 05:   Gangtok to Kalimpong (77 km) 3 hours: Drive to Kalimpong, visit to Tharpa Choling Monastery, belonging to the Gelugpa section of Dalai Lama. Then drive to Deolo Hill, the highest point in Kalimpong at 5,500 ft, which offers good view of the surrounding region. Then visit Jongdok Palri Phobrang Monastery. Overnight at hotel in Kalimpong.

Day 06 :   Kalimpong to Siliguri / Bhadrapur airport and fly back to Kathmandu.
