Critical Requirement:

Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency helicopter evacuation coverage is MANDATORY for all trekkers. Most agencies will NOT accept bookings without proof of adequate insurance.

Why This Matters:

Helicopter Evacuation Costs:

Medical Emergencies at high altitude often requires helicopter rescue.

  • Lukla to Kathmandu: USD $5,000 – $7,000.
  • Everest Base Camp: USD $7,000 – $10,000.
  • Remote Regions: USD $10,000 – $15,000.

Before Your Trek:

  • Email policy documents to yourself
  • Share details with your trekking agency
  • Save emergency hotline number 
  • Inform family/friends of insurance details
  • Take photos of policy number

In Case of Emergency:

  • Alert your guide immediately if unwell
  • Guide contacts agency who coordinates with helicopter company
  • Insurance company called for approval before takeoff
  • Helicopter verifies coverage with insurer 
  • Rescue proceeds once insurance confirms payment 
  • Keep all receipts for medical treatment 
  • File claim when your return home

  • Some policies require upfront payment and reimbursement 
  • Other provide direct billing to helicopter company
  • Keep detailed records for claims
