Overview

Lower Mustang Trek – A Journey through Culture and Contrasting Landscape.

The Lower Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most diverse and culturally enriching journeys, offering a remarkable blend of lush subtropical forests, deep river gorges, and stark trans-Himalayan desert landscapes.

This trek leads you into the renowned Annapurna Region, exploring the southern part of the historic Mustang district. Unlike the restricted Upper Mustang, Lower Mustang is accessible without a special permit, making it an ideal trek that combines comfort, culture, and dramatic Himalayan scenery.

The trail follows the ancient Kali Gandaki Valley- a historic trade route between Nepal and Tibet, and passes through the world’s deepest gorge, dramatically framed by the towering peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

As you trek towards north, the landscape transforms spectacularly. The trek begins in lush forests filled with rhododendrons especially vibrant during spring and gradually transitions into a high-altitude desert of arid, wind-sculpted hills, cliffs, and ancient caves reminiscent of the Tibetan plateau.

Culturally, the region is deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. You will pass through traditional villages with flat-roofed stone houses, visit centuries-old monasteries such as Jharkot’s revered Sakya Gompa, and experience the unique traditions of the Thakali and Gurung communities.

A major spiritual highlight is the sacred Muktinath Temple (3,800m), revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Pilgrims believe that bathing beneath its 108 water spouts brings spiritual purification and salvation, while Buddhists are drawn to its serene and meditative atmosphere.

Throughout the trek, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Tilicho Peak, and the sacred Machapuchare (Fishtail).
