Guides Mandatory for Trekkers

Updated regulations and why trekking with a licensed guide benefits you

New Regulation Effective April 2023

The Nepal government now requires all trekkers to hire a licensed guide or join an organized trek through a registered agency for most routes. 

What This Means:

No Longer Allowed:

  • Solo trekking without a guide
  • Independent trekking on major routes 
  • Booking permits individually

Required:

  • Government-licensed guide
  • Book through registered agency 
  • Minimum 2 trekkers (some regions) 

Route Affected:

  • Everest Region: EBC, Gokyo, Three Passes
  • Annapurna Region: ABC, Circuit, Poon Hill
  • Langtang Region: Valley, Gosaikunda
  • All restricted Areas: Upper Mustang, Dolpo

Safety & Emergency Response:

  • Altitude sickness monitoring and recognition
  • Trained in first aid and emergency protocols
  • Local weather knowledge and route finding
  • Communication with rescue service

Cultural Insight & Language:

  • Explain cultural sites and traditions
  • Facilitate communication with locals
  • Access to authentic
  • Ensure respectful cultural practices

Logistics & Convenience:

  • Handle all permit paperwork 
  • Secure accommodation at teahouses 
  • Optimize itinerary for acclimatization 
  • Recommend best local dishes
