Trip Detail
The Tsum valley is situated in the Trans Himalayan border of Nepal and Tibet (China) and is considered one of the most sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley. It was opened for trekking in 2008. The valley is drained by the Shear Khola, which originates from the western glacier of Ganesh Himal and east and southern glaciers of Sringi Himal and meets the Budhi Gandaki at Nyak.
Tsum' comes from the Tibetan word 'Tsombo', which means clear. The Tsum valley is surrounded by the Boudha Himal and Himalchuli to the west, Ganesh Himal to the south & Sringi Himal to North. This serene Himalayan valley is rich in ancient art, culture and religion. The local people of Tsum Valley belong to Tibetan origin, speak unique dialect and practice Bon religion. This trek starts at Arughat and the trail follows the winding Budhi Gandaki River until it reaches the first elevated Tsum vValley with magnificent view of the Ganesh Himal and other surrounding peaks. The trails are strewn with artistic chortens and lined with mani walls made of thousands of stone slabs carved with drawings of deities and inscribed with prayers.
Tsum valley has a long history of Buddhism. The Buddhist saint Milarewa is believed to be meditated in the caves of these mountains. Traditionally the valley had distinct geographical called “Tsum Tso Chuksum”, which means thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory. The ancient remains of the Tsum Kingdom are still visible today. The valley also boasts some unique and historic monasteries, including Rachen Gumba and Mu Gumba, which lie on a pretty plateau nestled in the lap of the valley, and Gumba Lungdang, situated at the base of a conical hill against the main slope of Ganesh Himal.
In fact, Tsum valley is geographically and culturally distinct area and we don’t find any development till date. As a result, the unique culture of this valley has remained intact. The people still practice their traditional culture and speak Tibetan dialect.
