Best Time to Trek in Nepal

Plan your perfect trekking adventure by understanding Nepal’s four distinct seasons.

Spring is one of the most spectacular times to trek in Nepal. The hillside blooms with rhododendrons in vibrant shades of pink, red, and white. Temperatures are warm and comfortable for high-altitude treks.

Weather Conditions:

  • Temperature: 10 – 20°C (lower) / – 5 – 10°C (high altitude)
  • Visibility: Excellent in the morning.
  • Trail Conditions: Dry and well-maintained.
  • Rainfall: Occasional light showers.

Best Treks:

  • Everest Base Camp
  • Annapurna Circuit
  • Langtang Valley
  • Ghorepani Poon Hill
  • Manasalu Circuit

Note: Popular routes can be crowded. Book teahouse well in advance!

Autumn is the most popular trekking season. Post-monsoon clarity provides crystal-clear skies and the best mountain views of the year. Stable weather patterns make it ideal for all experience levels.

Weather Conditions:

  • Temperature: 10 – 20°C (lower) / – 5 – 10°C (high altitude)
  • Visibility: Excellent in the morning.
  • Trail Conditions: Dry and well-maintained.
  • Rainfall: Occasional light showers.

Best Treks:

  • Everest Base Camp
  • Annapurna Circuit
  • Upper Mustang
  • Mardi Himal
  • All major treks

Note: Very crowded, especially October. Book months in advance!

Winter brings cold temperatures and snow to high passes. Lower-altitude treks and regions in the rain shadow (like Upper Mustang) remain excellent options with clear skies and fewer crows.

Weather Conditions:

  • Temperature: 5 – 20°C (lower) / -20°C (high passes)
  • Visibility: Clear skies, excellent views.
  • Trail Conditions: Snow and ice at high altitude.
  • Daylight: Shorter days (10-11 hours).

Best Treks:

  • Ghorepani Poon Hil
  • Annapurna Base Camp
  • Upper Mustang
  • Mardi Himal (lower section)
  • Pikey Peak

Advantages: Fewer crowds, lower prices, peaceful trails. Perfect for experienced trekkers seeking solitude.

The monsoons bring heavy rainfall to most of Nepal. However, regions in the rain shadow of the Himalayas (Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo) experience minimum rainfall and are ideal during this time.

Weather Conditions:

  • Temperature: 15 – 20°C (warm and humid)
  • Visibility: Poor, clouds obscure mountains.
  • Trail Conditions: Muddy, slippery, leeches.
  • Rainfall: Heavy and frequent.

Best Treks:

  • Upper Mustang (excellent)
  • Upper Dolpo
  • Naar Phu Valley

Avoid: Everest, Annapurna, Langtang regions.

Advantages: Lowest prices, virtually no crowds, lush landscapes (in rain shadow regions).
