Shishapangm is one of the lovely mountains of Tibet, which lies in its autonomous region. Only very few people in the world have an idea about the Shishapangma before Chinese opened Tibet to the western summiters in 1978 A.D. It is regarded as the holy mountain by the Tibetans. It is the youngest among fourteen mountains above 8000 m that lies in high Himalayan ranges.
Shishapangma the 14th highest mountain above 8000m is relatively safe for climbing and has two summits; the higher true summit is 8027m and lower summit is 8012m. Commonly climbed summit is lower summit 8012m. The peak lies entirely in Tibet, close to the Nepalese border, shrouded behind the great, but less high peaks of Langtang.
The North West normal route to Shishapangma takes us up an easy angled snow slopes up to 35 degrees with one steeper section and have to fix the necessary lines on the steeper or crevassed sections. The Base Camp is at an elevation of 5000m, ABC at 5400m, Camp I at 6730m, Camp IIat 7045m and Camp III at 7400m. From Camp III, it takes about 9 - 12 hrs to reach the summit.
Competent alpine climbing technique and experience climbing on mixed terrain with heavy packs along with good basic mountain climbing skills are needed to climb this mountain.
