Trip Detail

This trek offers insight into rich culture, pristine nature, glorious history and life style of the nomadic people in the far remote area in Tibet. This trek begins from the Shalu Monastery passing through several villages and uninhabited dry canyons known by the name  of Showa-la and Char-la. These canyons en route are not particularly high or difficult and the trailheads are easily accessible. It is about a 10-hour walk to Ngor from Shalu, which is best divided into two days and this two or three-day trek is a good opportunity to explore remote area in Tibet. The trek ends Nartang Monastery.

Shalu Nartang Trek Itinerary

Day 01:  Fly Kathmandu to Lhasa (3650m)

 On arrival at Gonggar airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to hotel in Lhasa. Rest of the day free for rest and acclimatization Overnight at hotel

Days 02 & 03:  Lhasa Sightseeing

With a relaxed pace to allow for the effects of altitude we spend two days in Lhasa and during the period we visit the great Potala Palace the residence of the Dalai Lamas of Tibet; Norbulinka, the Summer Palace; Drepung  Sera, two of the biggest Buddhist monasteries of Tibet; the Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibet; and the bustling Barkhor Tibetan Bazaar. Overnight at hotel

Day 04: Drive Lhasa Lake Yamdrok-Karo-La Glacier-Gyantse
Early morning we depart from Lhasa, pass Mt Gangbala 5000m, then to Yamdrok tso lake which is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet (another 2 is Namtso lake and Manasarovar), then further drive to Gyangtse via Karo la Glacier, visit Gyangtse Pelkhor Monastery Overnight stay in hotel

Day 05: Drive from Gyantse to Shalu
After breakfast in hotel in Gyantse around 8 am, we drive to Shalu Monastery (19 km to south Shigatse city), visit this Chinese and Tibetan Style Monastery with green tiled roof. Today we will have lunch box prepared in Gyantse, in the afternoon, we have full relaxation and set up camping, enjoy excursion and overnight at camp

Day 06: Trekking Shalu Monastery to Upper Lungsang, 13 km, about 5 hrs
Today we will trek leisurely and ascent 200 m. we are going to pass by Ri-Puk Monastery, Phunup village and Showa-la pass [4200m]-Manitinga which we will pass through the village of Lower Lungsang and we will get to Upper Langsang. Overnight at camp

Day 07: Trekking Upper Lungsang to Ngor Monastery, 8km, 3-4 hrs, 550m ascent
Today we will ascend 550m, trek 3-4 hrs to get to Ngor Monastery. On the way, the high pass is Char-la pass [4600 m], after we ascend slowly from Upper Langsang to Char-La pass; we will descend down to Ngor Monastery which takes about 50 minute. Overnight at camp

Day 08: Trek to Nartang Monastery, 18km, 5 hrs, 300m descent, drive to Lhatse
From Ngor a motorable road runs down the valley. 15 min from the monastery is the sizable village of Pero. Around one and a half hour later, we will see the road bend to the north while the road trade route to Sakya continues west over a saddle. Another one hour later, we will get to the village of Dzong Lugari. From Dzong Lugari, we will continue 2 hours trek to reach our destination of Nartang where our Tibetan driver and the vehicle will wait for us, then we will be transferred Lhatse, Overnight in Lhatse

Day 09: Drive from Lhatse to Rongbok Monastery (about 200 km)

The road from Lhatse to Rongbok is a little bit tough, but our Tibetan driver will transfer us safely to reach to Rongbok Monastery. Then, we can take an easy trek up to 8 km to Everest Base Camp, complete excursions in Base camp, in the afternoon, we trek or take horse carriages back to Rongbok Monastery.

Day 10: One day excursion in Base camp, later afternoon, we drive to Old Tingri
We may not have enough time to take pictures of Everest, mostly our guests will return to Base camp and say goodbye to Everest closely and then in the afternoon, we drive to Old Tingri.

Day 11: Drive from Old Tingri to Zhangmu, to be picked up by our Nepal staff, to KTM At around 7 am, we will be ready for departure for Tibet border Zhangmu town, and we will cross the border and be picked up by our friendly Nepalese Staff. (Tour in Tibet ends)
